Fertigo is a smart composting unit that processes and produces fertilizer in a time-effective way for small-scale farmers in urban and peri-urban green spaces. In an era of technological innovation and environmental degradation, Fertigo aims to offer an alternative to de-localized industrial composting.
The unit facilitates on-site composting. Mature, ready-to-use fertilizer can be obtained in as fast as 20 days, a series of easy interactions provide for the ideal composting process.
Fertigo comes with an app and website that allows community urban farmers to log their household food waste and track the status of their compost in the respective composting bins. The dashboard gives a detailed look at the Carbon and Nitrogen levels present in the current compost makeup, the heat of the compost pile, and the relative humidity. The compost bin will then send alerts to the urban gardener recommending what should be added next to maintain a healthy ratio of 'browns' and 'greens' and when to aerate the compost.
CI and Interactive design were done by Julian De Freitas.
Fertigo can be placed in a variety of urban farming and gardening contexts.
The final outcome is the result of a month-long design process with multiple sketches and CAD models.
